Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation (LUT) is hiring a new Building Engineer. In this position, you will provide professional engineering services and supervision in our Planning and Development Services Building Services section.

As LUT’s next Building Engineer, you will excel at reviewing civil engineering design for code compliance, and provide support for civil engineering and site design-related work. We will rely on you to identify design problems and to request revisions from supporting firms. You will be our go-to person to answer questions concerning building regulations and structural and civil engineering design questions.

Our problem solver: In the office and in the field

Our Building Engineer is the person we look to for resolution of inspections that are not in compliance through persuasive, collaborative dialogue with the developers and construction managers. Site observation visit to commercial, industrial and residential projects will allow for proactive identification of noncompliance issues, resulting in timely resolution.

Do you have what it takes?

As our next Building Engineer, we will need to you apply your knowledge of engineering principles, practices, methods and techniques to commercial, industrial and residential construction. You will be our resident expert on state and local laws, rules, regulations and standards, and will know state specialty codes, international building codes and industry standards inside and out.

Analyze engineering problems and work collaboratively to arrive at solutions.


LUT’s Building Engineer will have:

A Bachelor’s degree in Structural or Civil Engineering AND

Four years of responsible experience in engineering or plans examination.

Registration as a professional civil or structural engineer with a license to practice in the state of Oregon within six months following appointment.

An Oregon A level Plans Examiner Certificate, or be able to apply for and pass both the Oregon Inspector Certificate and ICC Commercial Building Plans Examiner Certificate within six months of hire.

A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record, per Washington County policy.
