Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation (LUT) is hiring a new Principal Engineer. In this position, you will exercise direct supervision over assigned professional, technical and administrative support staff.  This includes planning prioritizing, assigning, supervising and reviewing the work of all engineering staff.

As LUT’s next Principal Engineer, you will determine the scope of engineering projects, prepare requests for proposals, contract for consulting services, review plans of consulting engineers and private contractors, make technical engineering decisions and establish technical criteria and standards.

Principal engineer – Leader, problem solver, administrator

Our Principal Engineer leads the engineering team. She/he resolves problems and provides interpretation of administrative policies to staff, other departments, consultants, contractors and the public. He/she coordinates the construction inspection of projects; ensures conformance with contract plans, specifications, and applicable codes; approves progress payments; and approves change orders as needed. She/he also responds to requests for environmental reviews and oversees the acquisition of appropriate permits from regulatory agencies for assigned projects.

As our next Principal Engineer, we will need you to apply your knowledge of civil engineering principles, budget preparation and administration, project management, staff supervision, public works project administration and more. You will keep us current on developments, literature and other information sources regarding civil engineering.

LUT’s Principal Engineer will be able to:

Conduct comprehensive engineering studies and prepare reports with appropriate recommendations.

Make engineering design computations, and check, design and prepare engineering plans.

Manage, coordinate and prioritize work associated with emergency situations.

Prepare plans and drawings neatly and accurately.

Supervise and implement comprehensive engineering programs.

Perform technical research and solve difficult engineering problems.

LUT’s Principal Engineer will have:

A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or closely related engineering field; AND

Eight years of experience in civil engineering or increasingly responsible experience in civil engineering theory, principles, and methods, and experience in municipal engineering design, construction and contract management which includes a minimum of two years lead or supervisory experience.

Registration as a professional civil or traffic engineer with a license to practice in the state of Oregon within six months following appointment.

A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record, per Washington County policy.
